Reading and Ugly Sweater Day in the Math Center

                                                                                                                      We landed on the moon!

The Math Center is open Reading Day, Friday, December 6, 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Undergraduate students: wear an ugly sweater, enjoy coffee, cocoa and cookies while supplies last, and talk to the tutors about any mathematics questions before your final exam.

The Mathematics Student Center has three locations - the main Math Center on President's Circle, the FASB satellite location, and online tutoring. Free drop-in tutoring is available for the following classes:

  • Math 980
  • All 1000 and 2000 level Math Department courses
  • Math 3070-3080 (Statistics), Math 3140 & 3150 (PDEs), and Math 3160 (Complex Variables)
  • Math 3210-3220 (Foundations of Analysis)

See the panels below for locations, hours and tutor schedules. All tutors can help with algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. The schedules also show which additional classes each tutor can help with.  Tutors in the T. Benny Rushing Math Center are also able to help in the computer lab as noted on the schedule.

All math tutoring center locations are closed during semester breaks and University holidays:

  • Monday, September 2: Labor Day holiday
  • Monday, October 7 - Saturday, October 12: Fall Break
  • Thursday, November 28 - Saturday, November 30: Thanksgiving Break

If you have questions or concerns please email Lisa Penfold (she/her), Director of Undergraduate Services, at [email protected] or visit her in the Math Center, room 155A.

The Math Center is open Reading Day,

Friday, December 6, 10:00-6:00

The Math Center is located in the basement connecting JWB and LCB. It has individual study desks, four group study rooms, a computer lab, and the tutoring center.  Tutors are able to help in the computer lab as listed on the schedule.

History

The construction of the T. Benny Rushing Mathematics Student Center (commonly called the Math Center) took place in conjunction with a renovation of the LeRoy E. Cowles Building. Construction, made possible through a generous donation from the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation, was started in April 2000 and completed in December 2001.

The Math Center is a math haven for undergraduate students and their studies.  Students receive free tutoring for select math department courses, have access to a computer lab, and study in one of our group study rooms or independently at one of the  individual study desks.

The center is named in honor of Professor T. Benny Rushing, whose leadership of the Department of Mathematics and College of Science, combined with a persistent pursuit of excellence, helped shape their future for faculty and students alike.  A professor of mathematics at the U for nearly 30 years, Dr. Rushing's insightful intellect and wry humor contributed to his success as an inspiring teacher and mentor as well as a gifted mathematician and researcher.  He served twice as chair of the Department of Mathematics and led the College of Science as dean from 1993-1997.

The FASB satellite location is located in FASB 205. Tutoring is offered for Math 980, all 1000 and 2000 level math courses, and Math 3070-3080, 3140, 3150, 3160, and 3210-3220.

The Math Center hires undergraduate and graduate students to be tutors and graders.  Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis, although hiring generally takes place before fall semester, and on occasion before spring semester.  Please complete the application below and provide at least one, preferably two, recommendation forms.  At least one of the recommendation forms should be completed by your math instructor.  Completed applications may be submitted to the Mathematics Department office, JWB 233.

  • Applicants for tutor positions should have completed the Calculus series and taken at least one math class beyond Calculus.
  • It is best if applicants for grader positions have completed at least the Calculus series.
